In love with bicycling

Bicycle Sailing on a Beach

Found on http://bikewithsteven.blogspot.com/2010/11/gusts.html

“You’re not in love with sailing.  You’re in love with the idea of sailing”.  That’s the line I remember so clearly from a movie, though I can’t recall the movie I heard it in.  I think it was a Kevin Bacon movie. It felt like the character was speaking directly to me when I heard it, because that’s exactly how I feel to this day.

I grew up on commercial fishing boats for much of my young life. I loved being out on the open water, bouncing around and riding the waves. I especially enjoyed standing on the bow of the boat and watching the porpoises speed along and play in the wake like mini orcas surfing along. Sometimes I would imagine they were looking up at me and inviting me to join them in their play. I wondered how that would feel to be speeding along beside them.

Though I hadn’t spent any time on actual sailboats growing up, I’ve always held them up as this romantic idea in my mind. The idea of the wind pulling me along for a ride is something I’ve been in love with since a child. The concept that you could have some level of control over your direction and speed, and yet also be at the mercy of mother nature has lived inside me for years. As I’ve never taken any serious action to become a sailboat captain or join a crew, it does indeed appear that I’m in love with the idea of sailing, and not the actual act of sailing.

There is however, a similar act that I am equally in love with. The act of climbing on my bicycle and riding off into whatever direction my heart feels compelled to take me. The moment I lift my feet off the ground and direct them to the pedals, it feels like I’m taking off into the air like a bird. Have you ever sat looking off the edge of a cliff, watching the birds take flight over the vast openness? Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to be able to soar through the air like that, being supported by the wind flowing under your wings? The bird cannot control the wind. The bird is powerless to make the wind do anything. And yet, the bird has the ability to ride it and set a course for itself. The bird and the wind are in beautiful concert together, playing out some unknown song that begs to be heard. When I set off on my bicycle, that is how I imagine the bird feels as it floats on the wind high above the ground.

If you ever pass me by on a bike ride and you see tears in my eyes. Those are likely not tears of sadness, but tears of joy. Tears, brought on by a state of euphoria that often overtakes me at some point during the ride.

Oregon Coast Loop Bike Ride : Day 5 : 77 Miles : From Florence (Honeyman) to Eugene.

Up ay 6am and packing. It’s a bit chilly and wet. So thankful for the cooking of Kathy this morning. Eggs and french toast.  Divided Google map is at the bottom due to a technical glitch it’s in two parts.

Only 3 miles in to the bridge over Siuslaw and another flat for Michelle. At least the coffee roaster was near by.

Mile 15.7

Mile 20ish. Farnham rest stop. Maintained a good 17 to 19 mph the whole way out. Wide shoulder. But it was wet the entire way. May be finally drying up. These houses above are dotted along the river.

5 miles later we start the climb (25.13). Actually it wasn’t a difficult climb at all. Very gradual.

Mile 43 is blackberries. Mmmmm

Pulled into Triangle Lake late. We’re pulling up the rear and missed all the good food. Darned flat tire. 🙁

Alderwood at 56.6. Last ones in again. This time we arrived to applause and “Here they are.” comments.

After this, we put it in high gear. We were hitting 18 and 19 mph for much of the last bit of ride into Eugene. Passed 4 riders to not finish last. 🙂

And this little guy was at the finish line for good luck.

We got a slow start today because I had to stop off where ther was reception to deal with a few business related issues.  We stopped off at the Green Salmon coffee shoppe in Yachats. I had one latte but Michelle had two with a total of 5 espresso shots!

I had to take at least 3 customer calls and respond to two online support requests while at the Green Salmon.  But I also had 1 new customer sign up while we sat there.

About a mile up the road, michelle realized her camera betteries were dying, so we went back to Yachats to get some double AA’s.  Added a couple miles to our ride.

One of our first stops was this bridge.

Next we stopped just after Heceta Head light house to take this picture.  The sea lion caves are just south of here.

Started out a bit cold. But the Pirate Coffee Company warmed us up a bit.

Above was taken at Otter Crest Loop. I had never been down this road before. Very nice side trip from the 101.

Michelle got a flat tire on the south side of the bridge into Waldport. The visitor center is behind me.

And here is where we charged our devices at Beachside State Park.

Oregon Coast Loop Bike Ride : Day 2 : 75 Miles from Corvalis (County Fairgrounds) to Lincoln City (Devils Lake State Park)

This day was one of my favorites.   Started out with a lot of truck/semi traffic, but in the beginning there were wide enough shoulders to deal with it.  So may points on this map that Google had to divide it into two sections.

Oregon Coast Loop : Day 2

Once we got up into the hills, there was a really nice stretch of skinny road next to a railroad track.  Very light traffic, lots of trees/shade.

At mile 24, the road turned to gravel, and we had to wait for our Adventure Cycling guides to give us a short 2 mile ride to the other side.

This poor snake was still alive, but his insides were his outsides.  He was trying to get off the road.

Not too far later we took a little break to enjoy some of the many blackberries growing on this path.

Not too far after this we had a close call with a semi.  The support vehicle was passing us just before a hill & corner, and the semi behind him thought he would pass as well.  No a bright decision as another semi was coming around the corner/hill.   The oncoming semi was honking and yelling and it was slightly stressful.  We pulled through okay though.
